With December 25th just a little over a month away Christmas spirit is all around in Salisbury (and it seems to be spreading)! With event after event scheduled in the city throughout this November and December 2018.
For our guests staying at The Red Lion Hotel between now and January, there’s no denying Christmas is one of the most special times to pay us a visit. Our log fires are roaring, the hotel’s historic halls are suitably decked with holly, and steaming hot Christmas dinners are making their way into our dining room daily.
So if you’re looking for the ultimate Christmas escape this wintertime in England, here’s three festive events on offer in Salisbury, all of which just happen to be a stone’s throw from our hotel front door…
Salisbury Christmas Market
Back again for another festive season, Salisbury Christmas Market is taking over the centre of the city from November 29th to January 6th offering a range of food, drink and artisan crafts and gifts, exclusively sourced from across the South West of England. Plus, for the first time in the market’s 7-year history, this year an all-weather ice rink will also be on offer. Giving visitors a chance to get their skates on and take part in a truly Christmassy activity.
Entry to Salisbury Christmas market is free, but ice skating tickets can be pre-booked in advance.
From Darkness to light Illuminations
Starting on Monday 3rd December and lasting into February, Salisbury’s famous Cathedral and its surrounding streets will be fully illuminated as part of an experiential art installation in the city. Visitors will be able to walk through a 500-sphere light and audio display, as well as encountering light sculptures in the grounds of the Cathedral and in Salisbury Cathedral itself. As part of the celebrations, a lantern parade will also take place one night only on December 6th, departing Cathedral Close at 18.15.
The Christmas House
The National Trust’s Mompesson House, an 18th century townhouse located on Cathedral Close in Salisbury, will be showing visitors precisely what Christmas was like for its residents through the ages with its Christmas House event. Beginning on November 24th and ending on December 23rd, visitors will be able to witness select rooms in the House’s ground floor transformed into different decades through history. While mince pies, mulled wine (and more) will be available in the House’s tearoom.
Entry is free for National Trust members; normal admission charges apply for all non-members.
We still have select rooms available at The Red Lion Hotel over the festive period, as well as spaces on our Christmas Party Nights, and for dinner Christmas Day and Boxing Day.
